I am deeply saddened by this post. After a week of teaching about bullying to my High school health class, I hear about this tradgey. Amanda Todd was a high school student plagued with bullying after a stupid decision gone bad. She flashed a anonymous person via webcam at the age of 12 and she thought nothing of it until later when a anonymous person contacted her saying they would spread the pic to everyone she knew…and they did.
Here is her youtube video:
This video was made one month ago, Amanda died last Wednesday, Oct 10th.
She was only 15 years old!!!
She was found dead in her home in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia just shy of 30 days after she made her video. She was found hanged to death in her home. A cry for help if I have ever seen one and she had tried to commit suicide a few times before this as well. She drank bleach once, only to be harassed by students and her face digitally plastered on Bleach bottles all over facebook telling her to try again. I cannot imagine how horrific this would be and plan to make sure that my own students and children know the ramifications of bullying. The parents must be beside themselves move after move only to lose their daughter in the end. Amanda’s bullying followed her to each school she transferred from causing a spiral into a bleak dark place for the teen.
Amanda Todd, a victim of cyber -bullying. A very real part of technology and today’s teens.
From the Vancover Sun:
“I have lost one child, but know she wanted her story to save 1,000 more,” Ms Todd told the Vancouver Sun. “Amanda wanted to tell her story to help other kids.”
Even after death people are using this as a opportunity to harass Amanda, saying things like ” I hope they have Clorox in hell” and taking photos and making her look like a zombie holding clorox.
One picture shows the silhouette of a female body hanging dead along with the mocking phrase: “Todding.”
Other commenters said she deserved the negative attention that she’d received from bullies after having a topless photo posted online when she was at school. (She was only 12, I am not sure that is old enough to really understand the consequences of the
This same topless photo was also re-posted to two “R.I.P. Amanda Todd” Facebook pages, which as of Saturday night had almost one million ‘likes’ between them.
FYI
Parents did you know that teens will post TBH on their facebook profile…. it means TO BE HONSET. They ask friends to be honest and tell them anything. It often spirals out of control as well. Please check your kids facebook and watch for what is posted and they post as well.
