Pottery Barn had these great plates with chalk Board pait on them for sale from $99 dollars for the 2 above. I love them but, you won’t catch me paying that for a decorative plate. So after a friend over at Fancy Frugal Life showed off her creativity, I was inspired to make my own plate for a wedding gift! Please show her some love for me!
I went hunting for a plate at goodwill and came up empty, so my next bargian place is Ross or Home Goods, or Marshalls. I found a super cute platter for $10. I went to Home Depot and got my Spray Chalkboard paint for $3 and was off and running.
Step 1:
As you can see I went with a rectangle platter and that made taping easy. My plate had that cute edging on it. As you can see I taped off where I was going to pain with Paint tape and newspaper to cover the edges.
This was the hardest part to me because I wanted to get everything taped down goo so there was no bleeding into the edging.
Don’t be afraid to use a round or oval plate as well and check all your cabinets for something that just sits around never getting used!
Step 2:
I used my spray paint chalk board paint and sprayed 2 coats adn let dry overnight before I wrote on it. It dried super fast here in Las Vegas, in other humid places leave 24 hours. Make sure you get the spray paint chalkboard paint not the brush on one. Lowes tried to talk me into that one…no thanks, That will just give you a big mess.
Step 3:
Your done, remove tape and newspaper. Here is how mine turned out. I had a wedding to go to and I packaged this in a box with chalk, and wrote “Happily Ever After” on it. Oh yeah, and a plate stand from walmart. Overall I spent a total of $16 for The plate, paint, chalk & plate stand.
P.S. The paint went a lot futher in my house though!! I added a few more of my extra DIY pics below as well!
I thought it turned out super cute and so did the hubby. I hope the Bride and Groom did too.
Hope you like my DIY,

I love this idea!!! Thank you so much for sharing.!! I am looking around the house for more idea’s to use the spray paint with!
Thanks Karen, I am looking for other ideas too, I did see a idea in the lowes magazine where you can paint a section of a wall and frame in base board, cute yet dangerous with my boys, lol
